Modified Barium Swallow

A modified barium swallow study is performed by a speech therapist to evaluate a patient's swallowing ability. Using a specialized x-ray machine, the therapist gives the patient several different foods and drinks of various consistencies. The patient is closely monitored under x-ray to determine if any food or drink is passing into the lungs instead of the stomach. The speech therapist will then recommend any further treatment, specific needs of the patient, goals and an appropriate diet that the patient is able to tolerate.
